ReflectionGran Cenote, west of Tulum on the Yucatan coast, is a gigantic hole that enables visitors to look down into a giant window on Sistema Sac Actun (the Water Cave System in Mayan). In the center of the hole, or cenote (say-noh-tay), is a small island. If you stand on the dock on the north side of the island, you see this opening leading to yet another cenote. Upstream of Gran Cenote is over a mile of beautifully decorated underwater cave. On the right side of this opening (and almost impossible to find) is a small opening through which the water continues to flow. Over the past few years, all but of a few hundred feet of this passageway has been mapped — quite an accomplishment when you consider the cave continues over four miles downstream to the ocean.
