Ornate Stalagmites

Ornatte formations such as these can be found in underwater caverns and caves throughout Mexico: Below and Beneath and the adjacent Riviera Maya mainland. People are often confused about the difference between stalactites and stalagmites. Here is how to tell the two apart:

• Stalactites must hold tightly to the ceiling, lest they fall.
• Stalagmites grow upward from the floor and, given sufficient time, might eventually reach the ceiling.
