The Ceiling of a
Million Stalactites

Sistema Sac Actun is one of Mexico’s most beautifully decorated underwater caves. Being able to shoot in an environment like this is not only an opportunity, it is also a responsibility. If any of these fragile formations are broken, it will be the next Ice Age before they can be replaced. The small formation that the diver is holding on to is one that will not be damaged by careful human contact. By holding on to this formation, the diver is ensuring that she will not accidentally back into any of the stalactites behind her. She is also holding her breath while posing, as exhaust bubbles can dislodge formations from the ceiling as easily as a careless fin kick can.
