Suunto Stinger and Spyder

Stinger: The Stinger is a highly capable, compact, wrist-mounted dive computer that also functions as an everyday watch for business or casual wear. It can track exposure to gas mixes ranging from air to ean50. The Stinger is no longer in production, having been replaced by the D9 and D6, which have a built-in electronic compass feature, multiple gas mixture capability and, in the case of the D9, hoseless air integration.

Spyder: The Spyder is an earlier version of the Stinger. It can track exposure to multi-level air dives; however, it is not Nitrox capable. The Spyder is no longer in production, having been first replaced by the Stinger, which added Nitrox capability plus several other features, and now the D9 and D6.

What Do They Need?

Normal service on these models involves periodic battery replacement. Indications that it is time for battery replacement include:

• A “low battery” indicator appears, as covered in the Owners Manual.
• The computer was functioning properly when last used; however, after a period of inactivity, it simply will not turn on.
• The computer will turn on but shuts down shortly afterward, or displays erroneous information.

The cost for battery replacement, including parts and labor, is US$45 plus return shipping costs. (Authorized AquaLung dealers should consult their Dealer Manual for pricing information.)

Every two years or 200 dives (whichever comes first), Suunto strongly recommends a bi-annual service that includes:

• Complete disassembly of the Stinger.
• Careful cleaning of all surfaces that may have been exposed to water.
• Battery replacement.
• Replacement and lubrication of eleven critical O-rings and several screws.
• Reassembly and pressure testing.

The cost for this bi-annual service is US$125 plus return shipping. (Again, authorized AquaLung dealers should consult their Dealer Manual for pricing information.)

More extensive problems may require additional parts and labor — or even replacement. If this is the case, we will contact you with an estimate of the total cost and ask for your approval before continuing.

Spyder-to-Stinger Upgrade: An alternative you should seriously consider is the option to upgrade your Spyder to a Stinger. As you’ve already read, this adds Nitrox capability plus several other features. The cost of the upgrade is:

• US$400 This includes: replacement of the entire inner workings of the computer (only the original case and watch band are retained); a brand-new battery; and, a 90-day warranty against defects in workmanship and materials for the new computer module.
• US$475 This includes everything just outlined plus a five-year, pro-rated warranty on the computer module.

In so far as both these prices represent a substantial savings over the cost of a new Stinger (not to mention the $45 to $125 you would otherwise spend to have your Spyder re-conditioned), this is a deal that may simply be too good to pass up.
