If you ask around, almost every diver will tell you that they wish they could dive more. With that pesky thing called work demanding so much of our time, families to tend to, and everything else we have to deal with as adults, it can become almost impossible to find more time to spend underwater. Those divers lucky enough to live somewhere like Florida, California or Hawaii, where your next dive is just down the street, have it much easier than the majority of us that live in landlocked places.
If your heart desires to increase your bottom time on a regular basis, try following these 4 ways to dive more:
FIND LOCAL SPOTS
Whether you live in Illinois or Nebraska there's bound to be a local body of water somewhere near you. Your job is to seek it out and do your research. Find out if you are allowed to dive in it, where the best entry/exit points are, and any special precautions like limited visibility or currents (if river diving). Don't limit yourself, you'd be surprised where you can dive: rivers, lakes, large streams, reservoirs, quarries, springs, and more!
LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS
If all you're really looking for is some solitude and tranquility under the water then it shouldn't really matter how great the diving is. If you make the decision to be good with the fact that not every dive will be warm, crystal clear and colorful, then you'll open yourself up to many more diving opportunities.
STAY CONNECTED
Another great way to get in more diving days is to be social and stay connected with your local dive shop and dive club. Where there are divers, there is diving. By being involved with other divers you'll be invited to more diving events and hear of more diving opportunities than going it on your own. Believe it or not but some of the most active divers are those involved in active dive communities, even when dive locations are scarce.
EXTEND YOUR OWN DIVE SEASON
Want to dive more? Try taking steps to alter your gear to allow you to dive more in your area. Are dropping temperatures in the winter keeping you out of the water? Consider investing in a good quality drysuit, dry gloves, and hood to keep you warm in that chilly water.
