Getting a new mask is always exciting, especially if it's your first or if all you've ever owned before were cheaper masks from the local souvenir store. Owning a high-quality silicone mask is an essential piece of equipment both for scuba divers and avid snorkelers. There are a few steps to take, however, before you can jump into using your new mask. Not taking these simple initial precautions can end in an annoying and frustrating foggy dive, so make sure to not skip over these steps!
How to prep your new mask before the first dive:
All high-quality masks are made with a silicone skirt. While this silicone skirt gives you the most comfortable, pliable, leak-free fit of any mask around, it also leaves a film on the lens of your mask during the manufacturing process. Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the mask does not clean this invisible film off of your mask before selling it to you. Therefore, you have to clean it off before using it on your first dive, otherwise, it will fog every time, even if you use defog on your mask.
Step 1: Apply scrubber
Apply a bead sized drop of either toothpaste (the paste kind, not gel) or Softscrub to both the inside and outside lenses.
Step 2: Scrub the lens
Use your finger to scrub the paste vigorously all over both sides of the lenses, concentrating on the inside of the lens. Make sure you scrub every inch of the lens. DO NOT use a textured sponge or steel wool to scrub as this will scratch the glass!
Step 3: Rinse
After scrubbing all parts of the lens, rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
Step 4: Store
Let your mask dry and then store it back in the original plastic box it came in. If done properly, this silicone removal process is only a one-time deal. You will need to use defog on your mask during each and every dive.
Step 5: Use Defog
Use defog each and every time you dive, before every dive. Apply a drop of defog into each lens, rub around, then rinse before donning your mask for the dive.
