Now that we have explored all of the different types of wetsuit that are available to you (see last weeks' blog) we can move ahead to the things you should be looking for when choosing the perfect wetsuit. A wetsuit can be a substantial investment so you don't want to make the mistake of buying a suit that ends up feeling too tight, not quite warm enough, or too warm for you. Empower yourself as a consumer by following these simple steps the next time you visit your local dive store so you can make an educated choice on your next wetsuit purchase.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT WETSUIT:
Step 1: Choose the right thickness!
We discussed in depth the differences in the types and neoprene thickness of wetsuits available on the market today in our previous blog but to simplify things, follow this chart of what to wear for the various water temperatures.

Step #2: Choose the right material
You may think that this is a silly statement, however, not all neoprene is created equal. Cheaper wetsuits will be made from a cheaper source of neoprene. In wetsuits, you pretty much get what you pay for. If you're looking for a suit that is easier to take on and off, you may want to consider investing in a suit made of Hyperflex neoprene. This is a softer, more stretchy type of neoprene material that makes the suit much easier to get on and off. Definitely worth the investment.
Step #3: Choose your features
When we say "features" we're referring to the bells and whistles that can come on your wetsuit. The more features you desire, typically the more expensive the suit will be, however, it is usually worth every penny. Here are some of our favorite wetsuit features:
- Seals on the neck, arm, and leg cuffs (making it harder for water to flow in and out of the wetsuit)
- Glued seems (reducing the areas of the suit that let water leak through to your body)
- Zippered ankles (makes suit easier to take suit on and off, and makes it easier to fit your booties on)
- Thicker core (increasing your ability to keep your core warm)
- "Skin in" (this material that coats the inside of the suit makes it both easier to slide the suit on and off, and a bit warmer)
By educating yourself on these easy steps to choosing the perfect suit for you, you will make your next wetsuit shopping experience much more enjoyable.
